Friendly Shots Fired!

Me (Jacqueline):

I love my husband.  He is absolutely awesome in every way except when it comes to taking photos (he’s an awesome assistant by the way!).  We had a friendly duel of taking family pics to compare his work (an amateur) vs. mine (the professional).  Yes, you may be thinking “That’s not fair!”  Well this happens often when you hand over you point and shoot to a friend in order to capture the family pic you are going to mail out for you christmas cards.  The challenge started.  I let him go first.

My Husband (Adrian):

When I was asked to take a family portrait of our friends, I was a little nervous. I’ve never been asked to do it and wife is the default photographer in the family so I’ve never had to think about it.  However, once the initial shock wore off, my confidence grew.  It’s just a picture.  I’ve seen hundreds of family pictures before and they are a great looking family, so how hard could it be?

Once we got to the park, I walked over to where the family was standing and positioned them in a way that the son wasn’t hitting them too harshly and there weren’t any people in the background.  With my very high standards met, I asked them to smile and I took the picture.  I was done.  I felt great about the picture and our friends liked it.  I was ready to call it a day.Mini-Sesson2
Then my wife took over.  She did things I would have never considered.  She moved them to another side of the park.  She had them in different poses.  Instead of hiding from the sunlight, she used it to make them stand out more.  She then took solo pictures of the kids and then of the parents.  Sure, it took about half an hour longer than mine but the family was having fun throughout the process.

I would have to say after seeing what it takes to get a good family portrait I would never volunteer to do it again and the difference obvious.  Here are the results:

Me (Jacqueline):  I was next, I took 20 mins.  I liked their first pose but the background was too distracting so I moved them.  Here are the results:  Mini-Session-100

I liked this but, I wanted more. I wanted them to have fun too!  That’s when I got this:

I also wanted to get a portrait of them where they were not looking at the camera but you could feel their love as a family.  I think this portrait captures them sweetly!
